FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS PARKOUR?
Traveling from point A to point B in the most efficient manner around obstacles. This includes movements such as, but not limited to; running, jumping, and climbing.
WHO TEACHES THE CLASS?
All parkour instructors at Challenge Rocks work hard to help each student progress. All coaches have been trained to focus on fundamentals of parkour, rather than focusing on “tricking” or “free-running.”
IS IT DANGEROUS?
Just like any other sport, Parkour can become dangerous if practiced without the proper safety precautions. The level of danger goes up if the participant is careless or practices beyond their skill level. At Challenge Rocks we work on instructing our staff to spot students whenever necessary. We also provide padding around any location that is likely to result in a fall.
HOW IS PARKOUR DIFFERENT FROM GYMNASTICS?
Environment alone is an indication of which practice is applied. Parkour is mostly outdoors in urban settings, as gymnastics is indoors. Movements may be similar. Gymnastics uses movement to display their skills in a routine, and parkour uses a choice of movement based on efficiency and safety around obstacles.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Classes are based on individual’s skills levels. The basics of our parkour classes revolve around overcoming obstacles in the path. Skills include jumping over, safely rolling/moving from one obstacle to another, traversing and more!
HOW WILL I BENEFIT FROM TAKING PARKOUR CLASSES?
Parkour is considered to be a non-competitive sport. It will help you get more coordinated, gain strength, and confidence. It is also a fun way to stay active!
DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?
Appointments are required for open climb to ensure staffing and capacity limits.
DO I NEED SPECIAL SHOES TO CLIMB?
Any closed-toed sneakers will work to climb. If you'd like to try climbing shoes, they are available to rent for $5/visit.
I’VE NEVER CLIMBED BEFORE. WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO DO IT?
Absolutely! Please fill out a waiver beforee your arrival. Upon arrival, our staff will assist you with equipment and walk you through how to safely clip in, climb and come down. Our 15 auto-belay make it easy for beginners to climb. New climbers are always welcome!
CAN WE USE THE ZIPLINE?
Use of the zipline is not included with open climb and is reserved for birthday parties and camp.
AM I ALLOWED TO CLIMB DURING A BIRTHDAY PARTY OR CAMP?
No. The gym is closed to the public during camp and birthday party events.
WHY ARE THERE DIFFERENT COLORED ROCKS? WHAT DO THE DIFFERENT GRADES MEAN?
Indoor climbing walls are man made to replicate the act of climbing natural rock formations. The colored rocks are called "holds" that are purposely placed according to different grades. Grades are used to show the level of difficulty for each route. Top rope climbing, where the climber is harnessed and clipped in, uses a 5.0 scale: the lower the number of the decimal accompanying the 5, the easier the route. Bouldering is rated on a V scale: similarly, the lower the number after the V, the easier the route. Stick to one color to challenge yourself to a particular route, or free climb to get accustomed to the walls.
ARE MY KIDS TOO YOUNG TO CLIMB?
We strongly believe that any child 4 and up will be able to climb. The greatest factors are level of interest and desire. If your child can fit into our smallest (full body) harness, they are welcome to use our facility. Children under 3 are free and may use our obstacle equipment and bouldering walls if they are too small for our smallest harness.
WHAT DOES A MEMBERSHIP INCLUDE?
A MEMBERSHIP INCLUDES UNLIMITED WALK-IN’S DURING OUR OPEN CLIMBING HOURS FOR THE SPAN OF TIME YOU SIGN UP (MONTH BY MONTH OR YEARLY). IT ALSO INCLUDES HARNESS RENTAL AND SHOE RENTALS FOR EVERY VISIT. ADDITIONALLY, EVERY FULL PRICED MEMBERSHIP INCLUDES ONE FREE GUEST PASS PER MONTH (FOR AN INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP) AND TWO FREE GUEST PASSES PER MONTH FOR A FAMILY MEMBERSHIP. FREE GUESTS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN DISCOUNTED OR FREE MEMBERSHIPS.
WHAT DOES OPEN CLIMB INCLUDE?
Open climb includes use of our auto-belays, top rope climbing (climbers must be belay certified at Challenge Rocks to use top ropes), bouldering walls and American Ninja Warrior elements. If you are unsure of how to use anything, please ask! We're happy to help!
DO YOU HAVE OPTIONS TO CLIMB OUTDOORS?

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE CHALLENGE ROCKS OVER OTHER GYMS?
Challenge Rocks is constantly changing elements of the gym and classes! We like to stay updated with new equipment and stay up to date with the latest developments in the sport. We are also home to an amazing group of staff that works really hard to make your experience as fun and as active as possible!
WHAT DOES A CLIMBING COMPETITION ENTAIL?
Contrary to common belief, climbing competitions are not about who can climb the fastest. Most USA Climbing competitions work on a point system. Individuals have a time frame to climb what they want - each climb is given a point value. Climbing competitions are a very supportive environment - everyone there supports each other.
SHOULD I HAVE MY OWN SHOES/HARNESS/CHALK?
Highly recommended! Training and competing in your own equipment provides a certain kind of comfort. You don’t have to worry about rentals and risking your size not being available. If you are ready to compete, it is helpful to have your own gear. Personal gear is higher quality than rentals. Keep in mind how often your feet change sizes and how often you compete when making a decision to buy shoes, we are happy to help any climber find the appropriate gear for their needs!
ARE PETS WELCOME?
Please be aware that Challenge Rocks is a dog friendly establishment and there are times when there are dogs in the gym!
2. Do not leave clothes and shoes on the floor.
3. Do not chew gum in the gym.
4. Please do not eat past the benched area.
5. Please ONLY drink water on non-matted areas.

7. UNATTENDED CHILDREN MUST BE AT LEAST 14 YEARS OF AGE.
8. The SLIDE for the ZIP LINE is ONLY TO BE USED FOR THE ZIP LINE unless STAFF says otherwise.
9. Only ONE person is allowed on top of each warped wall at a time!
10. To get up the warped walls you must RUN UP on your own! - Climbing from the small wall to the top of the larger wall is not allowed.
11. There is a labeled, one-way exit from the warped wall. This is the only way anyone should exit from the warped walls.
12. OBSTACLE COURSES are ALWAYS a ONE-WAY ROUTE.
13. Do not pass someone on an obstacle course.
14. Ask Staff for assistance if you are unsure of ANYTHING.
15. If you want to bring out an obstacle or move an obstacle please check with staff before doing so.
16. Only enter Zip-Line Tower if allowed! Once inside only one person per platform.
17. You must be clipped in if you climb above the stop signs on the top-rope walls!
18. ONE person can climb in the cave at a time.
19. NO SMOKING is allowed in front of OR inside Challenge Rocks.
20. Lead climbing, lead belaying, and belaying are allowed ONLY for those who are certified by Challenge Rocks.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING FOR MY BIRTHDAY PARTY?
All attendees will need to fill out a waiver prior to the event. Waivers can be found at the top right of our website. Don't forget to bring the cake, candles, lighter, serving knife, decorations, goody bags and athletic shoes and clothing for many of the birthday party options we provide.
DO PARENTS HAVE TO STAY?
The birthday host parents must stay. As long as we have capacity, guest parents may stay, as well! We are able to have a total of 30 people in the gym at once. The final headcount is taken based on the number of participants climbing.
CAN YOUNGER SIBLINGS PARTICIPATE?
Yes! The ages listed on our party packages are recommendations based on our experiences with party-goers. Younger siblings are welcome to join in the fun. We have full-body harnesses that generally fit children as young as 3. The final headcount charge will be based on the number of harnesses distributed.
CAN I DROP IN ON A CLASS TO TRY IT OUT?
Climbers can join a single class to check it out - the cost is $20-$40 depending on the length of the class. This fee may be applied towards class tuition if the participant registers for the class.
HOW DO I JOIN PRE-TEAM/TEAM?
You must be invited to join the team.
Attending classes/camp is a good way to have your skills evaluated! If you haven’t had an opportunity to attend camp or participate in a class, you may ask our coach for a tryout!
WHAT IS INCLUDED WHEN I SIGN UP FOR A CLASS?
Class Instruction, Membership, and Gear Rentals.
DO YOU PRO-RATE?
We do! Our customer portal will automatically prorate if you register mid-month.
WHAT AGES CAN SIGN UP FOR CLASSES?
Each class is grouped based on age and skill level. The youngest groups are 4-5 years old.
WHEN SHOULD I SIGN UP?
As long as there is room in the class we will allow rolling enrollment!
WHEN SHOULD I THINK ABOUT BUYING MY OWN SHOES/HARNESS/CHALK BAG?
Just like any other sport, you need to keep up with your own personal equipment. Having your own shoes and harness is one of the first steps to becoming a serious rock climber. When you rent equipment, there is no 100% guarantee we have your size available.
HOW IS “TEAM” DIFFERENT FROM “PRE-TEAM”
Pre-team only meets once a week, Team has a commitment of meeting twice a week. Team works a lot more on the strength aspects of climbing in order to prepare for competitions. The level of involvement, motivation, and commitment is a lot higher for Team than it is for Pre-team.
WHEN CAN I SIGN UP FOR TEAM?
Team is by invitation only! When we feel that Team is a good fit for you, we will let you know. You also can schedule a tryout with the front desk.
HOW DO I MAKE UP A CLASS?
Team make-ups can be done on Wednesday from 4:00-5:30pm.
WHAT DOES THE COMPETITION SEASON LOOK LIKE?
The bouldering season begins in the fall. USA Climbing competitions start in the fall and run through the winter. If you qualify, regional competitions are next. If you qualify past regionals, there are divisional competitions, national competitions, and world competitions.
WHAT'S YOUR REFUND POLICY?
Camp Deposits, Class Registrations, Birthday Party and Private Event Bookings are non-transferrable and non-refundable. However, during this time, your payment can be applied towards future camps, class enrollment, birthday parties, events or daily visits.
